“”Can a woman forget her nursing child, that she should have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you. Behold, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are continually before me.”
Isaiah 49:15-16 ESV
I love the illustration God uses in this passage–a nursing mother–because it is nearly impossible for a nursing mother to forget her baby. Why? First of all, the bond of love between the two is indescribable. Words cannot describe the immediate deep connection I had with each of my children. From the moment I saw them, I knew I’d do whatever possible to care for and to protect them. But even if somehow that bond isn’t there, any woman who may have nursed knows that your body will definitely remind you a baby needs you if you wait too long. It is nearly impossible for a nursing mom to forget her child.
God uses a human illustration here to show the likelihood in human terms that He’d forget. Yet He knows that humans aren’t perfect. So He points out, even if a mom happens to forget her baby (which in that day and age was slim to none), He won’t.
You are not forgotten!
God will never forget you. God sees you. Even more, he knows you and has you engraved on the palm of His hands. You are always before Him. Always. You have not fallen through the cracks. You have not fallen by the wayside. God has not and will never forget you.
Now I have been blessed with two parents who have and continue to love me deeply, but I know there are those of you who may have had a parent or parents who neglected you or abused you. They are not God. Not even close. God will never do that. God will never leave you, never forsake you, and never forget you. Never.
So I’m not sure what your life looks like today, or what circumstances you may be facing, but please understand that no matter how alone and forgotten you may feel, you are NOT alone; you are NOT forgotten. God sees you, God knows you, and God loves you.
You are not forgotten!
