Waiting

I’ve learned many things along this journey. One of the biggest is the art of waiting. I used to view waiting in a negative light. It used to be torture to wait. Yet this journey has transformed my view. To wait is to be still in my spirit, to cease striving, and to trust the Lord to act in His way and in His time. Waiting is faith in action. It is not a withholding of something, but rather it is a joyful anticipation of things to come. To wait is to trust my future to the one who holds my future in His hands. His ways are higher and better than mine, so to wait is to allow Him the time to perform His good pleasure.

So for the last several days I’ve sensed change is coming. Yet I know not the specifics. So I wait. I wait and I listen. I know He will speak in His good time. Yesterday the desire to serve was so intense it was almost palpable. Yet that I want to serve is all I know right now. I’m not sure exactly where He wants me to serve or even when He wants me to start. So I wait. In this waiting, I brought my desire before Him, and shortly afterwards He faithfully orchestrated Psalm 37 for my evening reading.  Some highlights are below…

Trust in the Lord, and do good;
Dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness.
Delight yourself also in the Lord ,
And He shall give you the desires of your heart.
Commit your way to the Lord ,
Trust also in Him,
And He shall bring it to pass.
He shall bring forth your righteousness as the light,
And your justice as the noonday.
Rest in the Lord , and wait patiently for Him;
Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way,
Because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass….
The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord ,
And He delights in his way.
Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down;
For the Lord upholds him with His hand…
I have been young, and now am old;
Yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken,
Nor his descendants begging bread
He is ever merciful, and lends;
And his descendants are blessed….
The mouth of the righteous speaks wisdom,
And his tongue talks of justice.
The law of his God is in his heart;
None of his steps shall slide….
Mark the blameless man, and observe the upright;
For the future of that man is peace….
But the salvation of the righteous is from the Lord ;
He is their strength in the time of trouble.
— Psalms 37:3-7, 23-26, 30-31, 37, 39

So what do I do? I wait. It is His call to serve, so I must trust in His wisdom and in His timing. I must seek Him, rest in Him, and wait patiently for Him.  He promises He will act.  He promises He will bring it to pass.  And He who promised is faithful–always faithful.

Wait on the Lord , And keep His way, And He shall exalt you to inherit the land…Psalms 37:34
